Greenfield Historical Commission
Purpose
The Greenfield Historical Commission was established through municipal acceptance of Massachusetts General law Chapter 40, Section 8D and a premise that preservation is a local affair. The Commission cooperates with the Massachusetts Historical Commission/State Historic Preservation Officer and the State Archaelogist, and serves the community as the preservation planning arm of local government.
Under the General Law, Greenfield appoints a commission of five to seven members to three year staggered terms "for the preservation, protection and development of the historical or archaelogical assets of such city or town". The Commission researches areas and places of historic or architectural value, advocates for their preservatrion, and calls attention to their roles in maintaining a sense of place, enhancing community pride, ans as unique social and economic assets.
