Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I Make Partial Payments on My Tax Bills?

A: Partial payments are accepted on personal property taxes, real estate taxes and water/sewer bills only. Motor vehicle excise tax bills and parking tickets must be paid in full.

Q: Why Is the Former Owner's Name on My Real Estate Tax Bill?

A: Taxes are assessed to the owner of record as of January 1st of the previous calendar year (i.e. fiscal year 2003 real estate taxes are based on assessments on January 1, 2002). It is important to notify the assessors in writing of any changes in ownership or mailing address.

Q: Am I entitled to an Exemption on My Real Estate Taxes?

A: You may be eligible for an exemption from or deferral of all or some of your tax. In order to obtain an exemption for which you are qualified, you must file an application in writing on an approved form with the assessors. For more information contact the Assessors office at (413) 772-1506 or Click Here.

Q: Can I Correct the Mailing Addess on My Motor Vehicle Excise Bill?

A: No - the information printed on your motor vehicle excise tax bill comes to us directly from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Any change of address must be submitted to the Registry of Motor Vehicles. For your convenience, this may be done by visiting their website at www.marmv.com.

Q: I Received an Excise Bill for a Vehicle I No Longer Own. What Should I Do?

A: You need to apply for an abatement at the Assessors Office.

If the registration was transferred to another vehicle, bring your new registration and the bill for the vehicle you no longer own to the Assessors Office and they will adjust the bill for you.
If the registration was cancelled and you have a return plate receipt from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, bring the plate receipt and the bill for the vehicle you no longer own to the Assessors Office and they will adjust the bill for you. If you can't find your copy of the return plate receipt, you can contact your insurance company or obtain a duplicate from the Registry.
In either case, if you have paid the bill for the vehicle you no longer own, you will receive a refund check from our office in 2-3 weeks. If you have not paid the bill and there is a balance due, you can make payment in our office by any of the above mentioned methods of payment.

If you wish to appeal for something other than a broken meter, use the parking ticket appeal form
